Understanding the Bible and Christian History

Thursdays, April 3 - May 8, 7:30 PM
In the Great Room with Carl Anderson

How about a spring tune-up for your knowledge of the Bible and Christian history? Join me in the Great Room for a 6-week class on Thursday evenings beginning April 3rd thru May 8 on Understanding the Bible and Christian History. Classes are 75 minutes in length beginning at 7:00 p.m. The resource material for the sessions is the excellent Mosaic video series produced by the ELCA. Topics are:

  • April 3 - Introduction to the Old Testament
  • April 10 - Introduction to the New Testament
  • April 17 - The Life of the Apostle Peter with Rick Steves
  • April 24 - The Life of the Apostle Paul with Rick Steves
  • May 1 - Opening the Door to Luther with Rick Steves
  • May 8 - Faithful Travel with Rick Steves

Many of you know Rick Steves as the host of the popular public television travel series. Rick is an active ELCA layman in Seattle who feels travel is a way for us to enrich our faith with the world of history and other cultures.

Each video is 30-40 minutes in length and includes commentary from leading theologians of the church. We will have time for discussion. These classes are an excellent introduction to the key elements of Christian development and history, and will be a good foundation for deepening your knowledge and faith. Although I hope you are able to attend all six, each class is a stand-alone topic so if you miss one you can pick up the next week. The videos are also available for individual use.

The Mosaic production series ended in December with the Apostle Peter episode. The church has a good library of Mosaic videotapes and DVDs that include additional topics that may interest you. There are a number of other videos as well that you can use for small groups or individual use. See me if you are interested.

A Heart For God: Learning from David Through the Tough Choices of Life

Wednesdays, 9:15 a.m., in the Great Room

This spring, join the Wednesday morning adult small group to read and discuss A Heart For God: Learning from David Through the Tough Choices of Life by Rebecca Manley Pippert.

This well written, 12 chapter book, is an in depth look at David (1 Samuel) as, the shepherd boy, brave warrior, poet-musician, deceitful adulterer, repentant sinner, beloved king, "a man after God's own heart". David faced some desperate circumstances and some tough choices. So do we, day by day. In this book, Becky Pippert teaches us how we, like David, can choose the good, find hope and grow into people who have a heart for God.
